To remain tangle free you will need to comb them regularly. In summer once or twice a week combing should be enough. In winter and through early spring you will need to comb them every couple of days to keep them knot free. If they matt up badly a trip to the vet may be needed for a professional groom.
Don't forget to clip their claws regularly, particularly the polys. This will save your furniture and be much more comfortable for them too.
Maine Coons are generally happy to be friends with other pets. You just need to be sensible about introducing them to other family pets. Do not expect that they will be friends immediately, slowly introduce and supervise them until you are happy they won't hurt each other.
Maine Coons are a robust and generally healthy breed of cat; but there are genetic conditions associated with the breed. These include Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). All Rapscallion breeders have DNA tested clear for known conditions and copies of the parent results are supplied with purchased kittens. DNA testing is an indicator that they do not carry a gene known to be associated with HCM, but there could be other causes or genes which have not yet been identified.
